K. Malevich

Boulevard,
 1903. Oil on canvas, 55x 66 cm
St. Petersburg, State Russian Museum
Back    Next

In front of a backdrop of houses and a crowd of people, a young woman takes a baby out in a pram, pushing the pram
parallel to the frame along a path in the park. The white mob cap and pinafore that she wears mark her as a nanny. Malevich
uses the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue for the pram and woman. The pram gleams yellow, the cover blue and red, like the
servant's clothing. They stand out starkly from the green of the park. The red/blue of both cover and clothing also show that
the pram and woman belong together. Her facelessness and the color identity with the cover, define her solely by her activity.
She is represented not as an individual but through her job as a servant.
